Something has shifted in how people find local businesses, and it’s moving faster than most business owners realise. When someone types “best dentist in Calgary” into ChatGPT or Perplexity, they don’t get a list of links — they get a direct answer with specific business recommendations. If your business isn’t in that answer, you don’t exist to that searcher. Google Maps ranking won’t help you.

This is what AI search visibility means, and it’s becoming a measurable part of local marketing.

What changed and why it matters

Traditional local search worked like this: a person types a query into Google, Google returns ten blue links plus a map pack, and the person clicks through to evaluate options. Your job as a business owner was to be in that map pack and have a good website for when they clicked.

AI search works differently. The AI reads thousands of sources and synthesises a single answer. Instead of showing 10 options and letting the user decide, it says: “Based on reviews and reputation, here are the dentists in Calgary worth considering.” The user often doesn’t go any further. The recommendation is the destination.

The implications are significant. AI tools are now handling a meaningful share of local queries, and that share is growing. Businesses that appear in AI-generated local recommendations are capturing a channel that most of their competitors haven’t even started thinking about.

The critical point: your Google Maps ranking and your AI visibility are correlated but not identical. You can rank well on Google Maps and still be invisible to AI tools. You can appear in AI answers despite a mediocre GBP. These are different signals with different drivers.

How ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude handle local queries differently

Understanding how each platform works helps explain why your visibility can vary dramatically across them.

Perplexity is the most search-like of the three. It actively queries the web in real time, crawling current review platforms, local directories, news mentions, and websites when answering a query. Because it’s pulling live data, your Yelp profile, Google reviews, recent press mentions, and website content all influence whether and how you appear. Perplexity tends to show sources, which means a business with consistent, positive mentions across multiple platforms has an advantage.

ChatGPT (GPT-4o) uses a combination of its training data and, when browsing is enabled, real-time web search. Its training data has a knowledge cutoff, meaning businesses that have been well-documented online for years may have an inherent advantage. When browsing, it behaves somewhat like Perplexity but with different source weighting. ChatGPT tends to cite well-known review aggregators and news sources more heavily.

Claude (Anthropic’s model) draws primarily on training data when answering local queries without browsing enabled. This makes it more reliant on the historical web presence of a business — older, established businesses with strong long-term review profiles, Wikipedia mentions, or significant press coverage tend to perform better here.

The practical implication: you can be visible on Perplexity (which prizes current web presence) while being invisible on ChatGPT (which may weigh training data differently), or vice versa. A business that optimises only for Google Maps may still be missing all three.

AI visibility vs Google Maps ranking: what’s the relationship?

They share some drivers but they’re not the same metric.

Factors that help both:

  • High volume of positive, recent Google reviews
  • A complete, accurate Google Business Profile
  • Consistent NAP information across directories
  • Strong website content that mentions your services and location clearly

Factors that specifically drive AI visibility:

  • Mentions in local media (Toronto Star, Calgary Herald, Vancouver Sun)
  • Features on reputable third-party sites (local blogs, industry directories, Chamber of Commerce)
  • Yelp and Tripadvisor presence with substantial review volume
  • Website content that clearly and specifically answers common local queries
  • Business descriptions that are informative rather than keyword-stuffed

Factors that help Google Maps but not necessarily AI:

  • Proximity to the searcher’s location
  • GBP photo count and recency
  • Google-specific attributes and product/service listings

This is why tracking AI visibility separately from Google Maps ranking is valuable. They require partially different strategies and partially different content.

A real example: Calgary dentist visible on Perplexity, invisible on ChatGPT

A family dental practice in Calgary’s Beltline neighbourhood ran an AI visibility check across three platforms with five query variations each. The results were striking.

On Perplexity, the practice appeared in 4 out of 5 queries — queries like “best family dentist Calgary Beltline” and “Calgary dentist accepting new patients.” Perplexity was pulling their Yelp reviews (47 reviews, 4.8 stars), their Google reviews (83 reviews), and a mention in a local Calgary parenting blog from the previous year.

On ChatGPT, they appeared in 0 out of 5 queries. ChatGPT’s answers consistently named two or three practices with much stronger website authority and longer established histories online — one of which had been featured in a Calgary Herald dental care article several years earlier.

On Claude, they appeared in 2 out of 5 queries — the queries where their specific service (family dentistry, Invisalign) was mentioned, which aligned with content on their website.

Their AI visibility score: 40 out of 100.

The diagnosis was clear: they had strong current review presence (Perplexity loved that) but weak historical third-party mentions (ChatGPT and Claude didn’t have enough signal). The fix wasn’t to get more Google reviews — they already had plenty. It was to build mentions elsewhere: reaching out to the local Calgary family blog that had mentioned them before for a follow-up feature, ensuring their profile on the Alberta Dental Association directory was complete and linked to their site, and adding detailed FAQ content to their website about services and procedures.

Three months later, their AI visibility score had improved substantially, with ChatGPT beginning to surface them in 2 of 5 queries.

How to improve your AI search visibility

These aren’t overnight fixes, but they’re the right levers to pull:

Build mentions on third-party platforms. Not just reviews — actual mentions and features. Local news sites, neighbourhood blogs, industry associations, Chamber of Commerce member pages. Each independent mention of your business name and location strengthens your signal to AI systems.

Optimise your website content for natural language queries. AI systems read websites and extract answers. If someone asks “which Calgary dentist accepts emergency patients on weekends,” your website should have a clear answer somewhere. Create FAQ pages, blog posts, or service pages that directly address the questions your customers actually ask.

Maintain strong review volume across multiple platforms. Perplexity and other AI tools that pull live data weight review presence heavily. Don’t only collect Google reviews — also build your Yelp profile, your Facebook reviews, and any industry-specific review platforms.

Keep your business information consistent and current everywhere. AI tools synthesise information from many sources. If your phone number is different on three different sites, that inconsistency undermines confidence in all your data.

Engage locally online. Sponsors of local events, mentions in community news, comments and presence in local Facebook groups — these create the kind of distributed web presence that signals local authority to AI systems.

How to track it

AI visibility isn’t something you can monitor manually at any scale. The only way to know how you’re appearing is to run systematic queries across platforms and track the results over time.

Goodlink’s AI Visibility Tracker does exactly this — querying Perplexity, ChatGPT (GPT-4o mini), and Claude with five prompt variations per platform and calculating a visibility score. Pro users get all three platforms. Agency users also get Google Gemini. Free users get Perplexity-only checks to start.

This is a tool that didn’t need to exist two years ago. It does now.
